SALINE VAULTS

This zine project was all about trusting the process. With few requirements and a pretty unusual subject, I had to get creative to come up with a concept and visuals that would fill a 16-page zine. I ended up using table salt as a starting point and turned it into a thought-provoking zine about preserving memories and its connection to the human experience.

Going into this project, I was given a material and told that the final project had to be a 16-page zine. My material? Salt. Yes, the stuff you put on your fries or your icy sidewalk. I first approached the salt by conducting a few experiments, combining it with other materials to see if any cool reactions occurred. Spoiler: salt is kind of boring. My next idea was to pour salt on a piece of black cardstock and draw in it to create shapes and textures that looked interesting when photographed up close. I then had to explain to my roommate why I was playing with salt at the big age of 20. I was able to take these pictures and apply colors and gradients to the images to create vibrant visuals that would contrast with the sleek, minimal design of the rest of the zine content. I developed a series of poems about the preservation of memories in the human experience as it relates to the preservation properties of salt. Thus, the name "Saline Vaults."

I was able to combine the visuals and text in a clean, yet still engaging way, making for a good, quick read and a display of creativity, trusting the process.
