Gommies is a sub-brand of the trendy Ippa Pizza in Erie, PA. This project was based out of the NWPA Innovation Beehive, which helps regional startups with their business needs. The client needed branding for three pizza toppings they plan to sell commercially: Hot 'Roni, 'Za Slaw, and Mootzarell. Through research, communication, and collaboration, my team and I were able to create cohesive, bold, and trendy branding that will definitely catch the eyes of shoppers and passers-by!
From the get-go, we worked closely with our client to really hone in on what he was envisioning. That’s where our research came in, so we decided to head to Erie and visit Ippa Pizza ourselves. First things first: taste testing the pizza — this was a must. It gave us a solid feel for the existing branding and helped us understand how to capture that trendy, industrial, bright, yet simple vibe. We also checked out other pizza topping brands on store shelves, which presented us with the challenge of creating a pizza topping brand that’s both cohesive and stands out on its own.
After lots of sketching, conceptualization, and collaboration we were able to come up with 3 main logos -one for each product- as well as alternative logos and a color palette. We went with a funky, organic typeface and incorporated imagery of the food associated with the logo to make it more interesting. We also went with colors that not only represented the foods they will be placed on, but will compliment the colors of the food when they are in the packaging. We applied these assets to labels that our client intends on using for his products. These can be seen displayed above.
This project gave me experience in working with a team under a supervisor and communicating effectively with a client. I learned how to ask directed questions and really dig deep to understand a client's vision. I was also pushed out of my comfort zone in creating a logo that is a little less serious and a little more fun!
